Total is a French oil company founded in 1924 as Compagnie Française des Pétroles whose activities were initially concentrated in the Middle East and, after the war, the expansion of the company, also thanks to various international acquisitions, laid the foundations for in Africa, Italy and the United States. Total officially entered the Italian market in 1953 when, from the Italian oil company Aquila, it took over the entire commercial network and 50% of the Trieste refinery still owned by Aquila. Subsequently, in 1987 the refinery, after having acquired the entire property, was sold to SELM which then merged with Shell, giving life to Monteshell. Total re-entered the Italian market in the late 1990s when it acquired its Belgian competitor Finas or Petrolfina and In 2010, Total merged with the Italian ERG Petroli to create TotalErg.
