Total is a French oil company founded in 1924 as Compagnie Française des Pétroles, whose activities were initially concentrated in the Middle East. After the war, the company's expansion, also thanks to several international acquisitions, laid the foundations for activities in Africa, Italy, and the United States. Total officially entered the Italian market in 1953 when it acquired the entire commercial network and 50% of the Trieste refinery, both owned by the Italian oil company Aquila. Subsequently, in 1987, the refinery, after having acquired full ownership, was sold to SELM, which then merged with Shell, giving rise to Monteshell. Total re-entered the Italian market in the late 1990s when it acquired its Belgian competitor Finas or Petrolfina, and in 2010, Total merged with the Italian ERG Petroli, giving rise to TotalErg.
