The Spirt of Ecstasy" was commisioned in 1911 by "John Walter Edward Douglas-Scott-Montagu 2nd Baron Montagu of Beaulieu" to Charles Sykes who, inspired by the lover of the 2nd Baron Montagu of Beaulieu Eleanor Thornton, created the mascot that has adorned the radiators of Rolls-Royce ever since. John Walter Edward Douglas-Scott-Montagu was a conservative British politician, motor racing promoter and father of "Edward Douglas-Scott-Montagu, 3rd Baron Montagu of Beaulieu" founder of the "National Motor Museum in Beaulieu".
