Bentley Motor Cars is a British company, now owned by the Volkswagen Group, founded in 1919 in Cricklewood by Walter Owen Bentley, known as WO, and has always been considered a company that produces luxury cars with a sporty soul. in fact, Bentley's participation in sporting competitions has been known since the early 1920s and thanks to the sporting soul of its founder, Bentley has also managed to obtain numerous successes, such as the first victory at the 24 Hours of Le Mans of 1924 to be followed by those of 1927, 28, 29, 30 and 2003, but also financial problems following the disastrous participation in the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1925, a participation which then determined the sale of the company majority by of WO Bentley, but, does not have the exit of its founder from the management of Bentley Motor Cars. The financial problems already manifested in 1925, the depression of 1929 and other contributing factors brought Bentley Motor Cars to the verge of bankruptcy, a bankruptcy which was avoided only thanks to the intervention of Rolls-Royce Ltd of Manchester, Bentley's eternal rival. In 1931, in fact, the Manchester company became the owner of the Cricklewood one, after presenting a secret bid at the auction held by the British Equitable Trust precisely to save Bentley from bankruptcy.
Rolls-Royce Ltd. was an English company in the automotive and aeronautical sector active under this name until 1973, when the English government, then owner of the entire British automotive sector, decided to divide these latter activities which were flourishing and they towed the whole group, from the aeronautical activities which, on the contrary, were in financial crisis due to the development of the RB211 jet engine; Thus, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars for the automotive sector were born, while Rolls-Royce Ltd. would go on to develop and produce aircraft engines. Rolls-Royce Ltd was officially founded on 15 March 1906 and found, however, its foundations in the agreement reached on 4 May 1904 by the aristocrat Charles Rolls and the engineer Sir. Henry Royce. The meeting organized in Manchester by Ernest Claremont, Royce's partner in Royce Ltd, led to the agreement that Rolls would handle the sales of cars designed and built by Royce. An agreement which soon led to the creation of the automobile company which is still today synonymous with quality and reliability, principles on which Rolls-Royce has always been based and which derive from Sir's spasmodic and constant search for perfection. Henry Royce to start the aeronautical business, set up the team of "inspectors" who would periodically check, at the owners of Rolls-Royce, how the drivers took care of the English cars they drove and was also the creator of the Class Driver Demonstration, training academy for expert Rolls-Royce drivers and above all aimed at Rolls-Royce drivers with no or little experience in driving and car maintenance. The inspection system was set up in 1908 when Claude Johnson returning from visiting the customer Mr. Barclay (Barclays Bank) was struck by the good condition in which the customer's Rolls-Royce 30 HP was kept but was very banned from driving his chauffeur . The consequence of this visit was the decision to offer a cash prize of £25 to the top 10 drivers who, in the opinion of the inspectors, have been the best at looking after their cars in the 12 months preceding the visit, the prize was then replaced by a full-fledged Certificate of Merit with a cash prize to all Rolls-Royce chauffeurs who would be promoted to Inspector's Checks for a two-year period. In 1910, however, the Class Driver Demonstration was opened which initially provided for a 6-day course for expert drivers, while for beginners the course lasted 3 or 4 weeks. In the years following its establishment, the courses offered by the academy changed and in 1930 they also included for the first time the Owners' Handbook for Rolls-Royce owners which are still used by the British car manufacturer today.
