Alfa Romeo, original Alfa Romeo emblem mounted on cars produced from the 1980s onwards, made of plastic and enamel. Diameter 7.5cm
Alfa Romeo is an Italian car manufacturer owned by the Stellantis group, founded in 1910 in Milan as A.L.F.A. (acronym for "Anonima Lombarda Fabbrica Automobili") and later becoming Alfa Romeo in 1918 following the acquisition of the company by Nicola Romeo. The cars produced by the "biscione" car manufacturer were characterized by a profound sporting spirit, with numerous participations in automotive competitions and various titles won in different categories, both as a constructor and by drivers, serving as great testament to this. The first emblem used by the Milanese car manufacturer was designed by Giuseppe Merosi in 1910 and consists of a circle with an external diameter of approximately 6.5cm with a blue circle inside bearing the brass writings ALFA and MILANO, completed by a red cross, symbol of the city of Milan, and the Visconti serpent, a symbol of strength and power, just like Alfa Romeo cars. In 1913, the brass of the writings was replaced by enamel, and in 1919, with the acquisition of the company by Nicola Romeo, the upper writing was modified to Alfa-Romeo; in 1925, the laurel wreath was added, and in 1946, it became red with the addition of two Savoyard knots. A further evolution of the Italian car manufacturer's emblem occurred in 1950 when it returned to enamel and brass, eventually becoming definitively plastic in 1960. The 1970s saw the emblem designed by Pino Tovaglia; to make the emblem more modern, the hyphen separating the words Alfa and Romeo and the word Milano were removed, and furthermore, the man being swallowed by the serpent became red. In 1982, the logo had a completely golden background, including the writing, was made of enamel on brass, and did not feature the laurel wreath, exactly like the emblem.
