Rolls-Royce, book Twenty Silver Ghost The Incomparable Pre-World War I Motorcar 1907-1914, drawings illustrations and design by Melbourne Brindle, text by Phil May and introduction by Julien Levy.
Rolls-Royce Ltd. was an English automotive and aeronautical company active under this name until 1973, when the English government, then owner of the entire British automotive sector, decided to divide the automotive activities, which were flourishing and driving the entire group, from the aeronautical ones, which were in crisis due to the development of the RB211 jet engine; thus, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars was born for the automotive sector, while Rolls-Royce Ltd. would continue to produce aeronautical engines. Rolls-Royce Ltd was officially founded on March 15, 1906, but its foundations lie in the agreement reached on May 4, 1904, by the aristocrat Charles Rolls and the engineer Sir. Henry Royce. The meeting organized in Manchester by Ernest Claremont, Royce's partner in Royce Ltd, led to the agreement whereby Charles S. Rolls would be responsible for selling the automobiles designed and built by Henry Royce. This agreement soon led to the creation of the company that is still synonymous with quality and reliability today, principles on which the British car manufacturer has always been based and which derive from Sir. Henry Royce's frantic and constant pursuit of perfection.
Ewart Melbourne Brindle (1904-1995), an automotive collector, was an Australian painter and illustrator with an American passport, and primarily known for his automotive and World War II-themed illustrations, advertisements, and designs; Brindle also created advertisements and magazine illustrations, stamps, and postcards for the American postal service. In 1918, the Brindle family moved to San Francisco, USA, and after a brief school career and various jobs, Melbourne Brindle moved to New York where, at 33, he founded his advertising agency and worked for companies such as Douglas Aircraft, United Airlines, Italian Steamship Lines, and various car manufacturers. Melbourne Brindle created the advertising for the launch of the Ford Thunderbird in 1955 and for the Buick Riviera in 1963 and, from 1950 to 1960, managed all Goodyear Tire advertisements. Brindle also received awards and recognitions for some of his works, in 1934 and 1938 when he participated in the New York Art Directors Club exhibition; the painting of King Edward VII's Daimler is exhibited at Buckingham Palace, while the painting of the Wright brothers is exhibited at the Air and Space Museum in Washington, DC.
The book, in excellent general condition, is the first edition from 1971 in English and traces the history of the English car manufacturer from its founding to the production of Pre-World War I Rolls-Royce, and also contains 26 color illustrations by Melbourne Brindle.
