Jeep, Diecast Metal Model Edition Atlas Collection Jeep Willys MB 1:43 Scale, produced under Jeep license
Jeep is today an American car manufacturer owned by the Stellantis group and was registered as a trademark in 1987 by the Chrysler group whose origins date back to 1908 when John North Willys founded Willys-Overland Motors in Toledo (Ohio). After years of various acquisitions (Dueseberg and others) and strong growth, Willys-Overland was, after Ford, the second American company by number of vehicles produced until the great depression of 1920 when Walter P. Chrysler bought the Toledo company and which will then become part of the Chrysler Corporation in 1925. Willys-Overland is above all known for the Jeep Willys MB, the four-wheel drive vehicle most produced and used during the Second World War; the Willys MB was in fact used by the armed forces of the United States and by the allied armies, with greater use in the British, Soviet and French armies. The term Jeep is, instead and according to some, the American pronunciation of the contraction of the acronym Genarel Purpose Vehicle (vehicle for general use) and, at the end of the Second World War, the term Jeep generally indicated any similar unarmored light military vehicle to the original Jeep. The GPV is an all-wheel drive vehicle built, as a prototype, for the first time in the 1940s by the Bantam Car Company and from which the models built by Willys-Overland Motors and Ford then originated. Following the outbreak of the Second World War, the United States government realized the need, for its armed forces, for a vehicle for connections and reconnaissance, which was equipped with four-wheel drive and mechanics suitable for any use, including the most difficult; Thus, a tender was drawn up which was won by Willis with the MB model to which was added, given the considerable number of vehicles to be produced, also Ford with the GPW model produced under license from Willys-Overland. In 1943 Willys-Overland, after submitting the application for the registration of the Jeep trademark, also began to publicize the great contribution that the Jeep Willys MB gave to the victory of the war conflict; initially the request of Willys-Overland was rejected given the discontent of Bantam and not only and so in 1944, Willys registered the name "AgriJeep". In 1945 the production of the Willys-Overland CJ (Civilian Jeep) was started and marketed with the slogan "Universal Jeep" and since Willys-Overland was the only manufacturer that actually made a Jeep model, in 1950 it obtained the rights to use of the Jeep name, which was followed by the request for the rights to the design of the grille with 7 vertical bars, while Ford registered the 8-bar one.
