Porsche, Solido die-cast metal model Porsche Type 550/1500 RS Spyder ref. 101 1:43 scale, 1950s 19

The Porsche 550 Spyder is a sports car produced by the German car manufacturer between 1953 and 1957, officially presented at the 1953 Paris Salon as a prototype intended for road racing because participation and victories in road races, in that historic moment, they were the best advertising medium available. The name of the German car originates from the project number made by Porsche, project no. 550 while the term Spyder is a tribute to the Cisitalia 202 Spyder Mille Miglia by a dear friend of the Porsche family, Pietro Dusio, founder of Cisitalia. The Porsche 550 Spyder despite being powered by a small engine of about 1500cm3 and about 135hp in the maximum power version, thanks to its lightness, only about 590kg, was able to reach top speeds of 220km/h and thanks to the results obtained on the field, the 550 Spyder 1500 was nicknamed the "Giant Killer" because it was able to defeat cars with sporting prestige much higher than that hitherto recognized by the German manufacturer in Stuttgart. The Porsche 550 Spyder is also known for having been the winner, in 1956, of the 40th edition of the oldest car race in the world, the Targa Florio, hence the adoption of the name "Targa" on some models produced by the Porsche from 1956 onwards, but perhaps the most famous Porsche 550 Spyder in the world is the one in which film actor James Deans lost his life in a tragic accident in 1955.
