The Trophy and the Race
The 4 Hours of Monza was run under the title of Trofeo Mario Angiolini, named after the founder of the Scuderia Jolly Club, the Milanese team established in 1957 and a leading name in Italian motorsport for decades, especially in rallying with Lancia, Fiat and Alfa Romeo. Jolly Club closed in 1997 and was re-founded in 2007. In 1972 the race took place on Sunday 19 March at the Autodromo Nazionale di Monza, as the opening round of both the European Touring Car Championship and the Italian Touring Car Championship. The trophy rewarded the winner of the 3rd division, the most powerful of the four Touring car classes, reserved for engines above 2,000 cc, where Ford Capris, BMW 2800 CSs, Alfa Romeo 2600s and Chevrolet Camaros competed.
The 1972 Victory
The 1972 4 Hours of Monza was won by Jochen Mass and Gérard Larrousse in a Ford Capri RS 2600 of Ford Köln, over 136 laps at an average of 194.2 km/h. The crew won the race outright and, as a consequence, the 3rd division too: the prize of this category was therefore the one awarded to the winning crew.
The Driver: Gérard Larrousse
Gérard Larrousse (Lyon, 1940) is among the most successful French drivers of the 1960s and 1970s: a two-time winner of the 24 Hours of Le Mans (1973 and 1974) and a six-time French circuit champion. After his driving career he ran Renault Sport and in 1987 founded his own Formula 1 team, Larrousse.
A trophy of rare historical and collectible interest, tied to an opening round of the European Touring Car Championship: the perfect complement to any collection of automobilia, vintage trophies and motorsport memorabilia.
