The car was built starting from the 1932 design of the Campbell-Napier-Railton Blue Bird, but the Napier-Lion engine was replaced with the more powerful Rolls-Royce R engine, a V12 engine with approximately 2300 hp. In 1933, the first attempt made at Daytona Beach set a record of 272 mph, and given the problems encountered with the car due to the greater power of the English V12, technicians were prompted to entirely redesign the car. Thus, on September 3, 1935, Malcolm Campbell set the astonishing land speed record of 301.129 mph, approximately 485 km\/h, with the 1935 Blue Bird.
